After a week of on and off storms across the region, the weatherman predicted a 50 percent chance of thundershowers in the area last Friday evening. Despite the dire predictions, nine boats from the newly-formed Booyah Bass Club did some storming of their own on Tuckertown Reservoir, blasting off from the Flat Creek Wildlife Access as heavy clouds and strong winds swept in.

The group, organized by Les Tolley of Harrisburg, NC, grew out of an open competition that was seeing staggering growth. Regulars all agreed something needed to be done to keep a handle on numbers. Formerly the Yadkin Wildcats, membership is now required in order to participate. Eddie Connor will asst in leadership duties.

The events allow either one or two anglers per boat. Five fish are allowed at weigh in and cost is a mere $20, which includes Big Fish. This week, payouts included an additional spot. In past events, the group had used a “winner take all” approach, but Tolley decided to begin paying additional places. Fifty percent of the pot would go to the first place winner, while 25 percent would go both to the second boat team and Big Fish winner.

The series fishes once a month on Fridays, beginning at approximately 4 PM and fishing until 9 PM. As seasonal light impacts tournament length, times are adjusted. This week the group fished from 3 PM to 7:15 PM. Events are held at both High Rock (Tamarac) and Tuckertown (Flat Creek) and those participating in events decide after weigh in where and what date they will fish next.

Recent rains have greatly affected water level and clarity, and light debris covered most of the pond. Although hydro facilities on the Chain have been pulling water on and off the past few days, no heavy current was apparent. “We were under heavy, overcast skies and the wind and rain were pretty extreme on and off,” stated Tolley. “But, Tuckertown did not disappoint.”

The team of Robert Loflin and Tim Burton captured first place honors with five fish totaling 14.34 pounds. They had a nice four pound kicker. The pair earned $90 in the outing. Eddie Connor and Ryan Mullis finished in second place with four fish weighing 12.32 pounds. They took Big Fish honors with a 4.32 pound large mouth. The team earned $45 for second and another $45 for the solo fish. Just outside paying positions, Eddie Lackey and Mark Bayse finished in third place with Les Tolley a close fourth.

The next event will be held at High Rock Lake on October 30 at 2 PM. The Club will use the Tamarac Marina on the west side of the lake. For more information contact, Les Tolley at 704-773-1970 or email him at tolley@ctc.net.

The Booyah Bass Anglers attacked High Rock Lake for four hours on Friday afternoon with a lot of teams bringing nice bass to the scales.
Eddie Lackey and Mark Bayse won their second tournament with five fish weighing 16 pounds 2 ounces. Their catch was boosted by a big 4 pound 12 ounce bass.

Les Tolley and Terry Trivett placed second with five fish totaling 14 pounds 13 ounces. Tolley (tour director) won big fish honors with a nice 5 pound 10 ounce. lunker. “With recent concerns over the fish kill, team after team brought fish to the scales. So, I don’t think the bass have been harmed. High Rock looked real good and did not disappoint,” said Tolley.

Andrew Motley and Dillon Mason had a nice third place finish with five bass totaling 11.0 pounds. Their big fish was a four-pounder.

The Booyah Bass Club’s next tournament will be on Friday, December 4, starting at 12:30 sharp until 5 PM. from the Southmont landing. For more information, contact Les Tolley at (704) 773-1970 or tolley@ctc.net.

Booyah Club Takes On Muddy High Rock
December 4, 2009
Story and Photos by Les Tolley

With high winds, muddy water, and cold front conditions, the Booyah Bass Club took on a tough High Rock Lake for four hours on Friday, Dec 4th.

“I have seen High Rock like this a lot through the years but this was as tough as it can be with trees and logs floating all over the lake,” stated club founder Les Tolley. “The guys fished hard and hung in there with several teams bringing fish to the scales”.

First place honors went to Bill McCoy, who fished solo, with three nice fish weighing 11.8 pounds. McCoy also had Big Fish for the event, a prize that weighed 5.05 pounds. This was McCoy's first tournament with the Booyah Club. “It’s safe to say with his win he will be back,” laughed Tolley.

In second place for the fifth time this season was the father and son team of Les and Derek Tolley. They weighed in four bass totaling 10 pounds 14 ounces. They also had second Big Fish. That solo weighed 4 pounds 14 ounces.

“If we were the only team to fish a tournament, we would still find a way to finish second,” stated a laughing Les Tolley. “But, the guys who fish with us are tough fishermen.”

In third place was the team of Mark Bayse and Eddie Lackey with four fish weighing 8 pounds 06 ounces, followed closely by the fourth placed team of Andrew Motley and Dillon Mason with 7 pounds 12 ounces.

The next tournament, weather permitting, will be January 22nd High Rock Lake with a 12:30 blast-off from the Tamarac Marina. For more information about The Booyah Bass Club, contact Les Tolley at 704-773-1970 or tolley@ctc.net.
