Cabarrus Club Rolls To Badin
April 18, 2009

Public Safety took to the waters of Badin April 18th as a small contingency from the Cabarrus Bass Masters club brought its competition series to the Alcoa Landing. The club's membership is made up of local paramedics, firefighters, police officers and other folks employed in the public safety arena.

Formed in 1991, the group was formerly associated with various national clubs, but has recently split off as a wildcat group. Organizer Alan Thompson said the group is looking for new members. “We are a few low right now,” he stated, “and we'd love to add a few more to our events.” Only four boats and eight members atended the Badin competition.

Like so many others Saturday on Badin, the anglers found fishing for bass spotty. Fish were small and finicky. Thompson and boat-mate Brandon Foutz, both of Concord, managed to win the day with 12 pounds 3-tenths of an ounce. “I'll take that today.” he stated. Thompson and Foutz also grabbed Big Fish with a 3 pound 4.9 ounce bass.

Second place went to boat team Mark Murphy of Lexington and Greg Duncan. They boated 7 pounds 2.5 ounces in the 5-fish competition.

Third spot was won by anglers Kevin Johnson and Howard Johnson with 3 pounds 9.9 ounces.

Cost to participate in the club's events is $30 per boat. The group moves on to High Rock in a few weeks. For more information about the club contact Alan Thompson by calling 704-791-2907.

Cabarrus Teams Run Monday On High Rock
August 8, 2009
By Alan Thompson and Fishbyte.net Staff

Although High Rock Lake has been consistently a top producer in central North Carolina this season, not even the bass can stand activity when temperatures soar towards one hundred degrees. When the Cabarrus Bassmasters hit town last Monday, heat came within one degree of that mark while the competitors were on the lake.

Six boat teams blasted off in the early morning hours from the Dutch Second Creek Access hoping weather predictions wouldn't hold. Only two of the teams were able to fill the limit of five-fish, something not uncommon to anglers this season. David Stewart and Wayne Warren were one boat team that found that many and walked away with a first place showing.

The Cabarrus Bassmasters group is made up of mostly public safety individuals from that area of the state and has been in existence since 1994. Events are not always held on weekends as members' work schedules are not typical Monday through Friday ones. Many anglers enjoy the lakes during the weekdays without weekend pressures. For this group, it is a common experience.

Finishing first, Stewart and Warren netted 8.24 pounds of bass to earn the $120 prize purse. Both are members of the Greensboro Police Department.

Second place went to a Cabarrus EMS employee, Alan Thompson. His three fish weighed 7.78 pounds and gave him a $30 paycheck for the day. He also earned another $30 for Big Fish. The solo angler landed a 3.42 pounder to win that award.

“We caught a lot of small fish out there today,” stated Thompson, “but it was tough to find keepers.” Thompson reported catching all his while flipping.

Chris and Wade Love and Steve Belk and Mark Murphy finished just outside the money with 7.75 and 3.25 pounds respectively.

The club's next event will be on September 26th at Badin Lake and the Alcoa Access from 7 AM to 3 PM. For more information, contact Alan Thompson, Director of the Cabarrus County Medical Services at 704-920-2606 or email him at dathompson@cabarruscounty.us.
