Wildcats See Record 24 Boat Turn Out On Sunday
June 14, 2009
As word has spread about the High Rock Sunday Wildcats, more and more anglers are turning out for the early Sunday AM blast offs from Southmont Landing. The past two weeks have seen 18 boat turn outs, but this past Sunday shattered all records as competition in the seven-and-a-half hour events heats up.
“I can't believe the jump in numbers,” stated co-organizer, Orlando Giles. “These guys really like this event. We just want to keep it fun,” he added as he bustled about the weigh in area helping get fish back into the water and healthy. Entry fee into the events helps, as anglers fork over a mere $35, which includes the Big Fish Pot. By 1:30 PM, the action is complete, leaving participants some time in the afternoon for other activities.
As boats rolled back in amidst heavy recreational traffic, numerous teams brought good bags to the scales. Bite had been small again, a phenomenon anglers on High Rock have been experiencing plenty of recently. However, there is always a boat or two that find the big holes. That was the case in Sunday's event when the average for the five-fish competition was around 13 pounds.
Steve Sink and Tony Foster, who had finished third in the Fishers Of Men Piedmont Series finale just the day before on the same lake, knew which spots to return to. Prior to their approach to the scales, a 14.15 pound bag had held the lead and it looked good that haul would top the list. That myth was shattered as Sink and Foster's pile measured a whopping 22.14 pounds. Sink also found Big Fish strike when he landed a 6-pound-even bass. The boat team took home $300 for their first place showing and another $115 for largest hawg.
“We paid out five places today with this many boats,” said Nick Ross, co-organizer along with Giles. “Purses went from the $300 to $190 for second and $50 for third through fifth. I am really glad our turnout is growing. It always makes it more fun when we get this kind of interest, and the fishermen love High Rock this time of year.” One or two anglers may fish from the same boat in the competitions.

Singleton And Menson Lead High Rock Attack
September 20, 2009
Sunday bass tournaments seem to be a favorite this time of year. With many anglers eying the woods and deep in them on Monday through Saturdays, there's one day of the week when woods are quiet and the waters come alive. The High Rock Sunday Wildcats seem to be the benefactors of this arrangement as the group continues a strong turnout for events.
Eighteen boat teams showed up for a safelight blastoff at the Highway 8 Southmont Landing last Sunday. Although winds blew fairly strong after the first hour, a number of anglers tickled some sizable weights into livewells. The 2 PM scale time was busy with many weighing in.
David Singleton and Jeff Menson lead the group with 15.2 pounds of fish and pulled away with top honors of the day. “We're still getting great turnouts,” stated organizer Orlando Giles. “The guys like High Rock and we are picking up a lot of boats from clubs who have finished up for the season.”
The High Rock Sunday Wildcats meet every Sunday to blast off at safelight. End times adjust with seasonal light changes and are announced prior to take off. For more information about the group, contact Orlando Giles at 336-357-3303 or Nick Ross at 336-357-1417. You can also email Ross at crew39racing@yahoo.com. Registration happens at the landing prior to the safelight blast off.
