Midstaters Crack Spring Jinx
March 20, 2010

Bite was on immediately for those flipping banks with soft plastics and, after a lull in the action, the Midstate Bass Club's anglers tore the heart out of bass during the last hour on Badin Lake Saturday. After a slow start on High Rock the month prior, the club roared back into action from the Circle Drive Access with nineteen boats.

For dominant winners Wade Smith and Mark Brown, it was about picking a few with spinner-baits and grabbing the Big Fish of the tournament, a 6 pound 15 ounce lunker with a black/blue jig. Their combined weight was an impressive 25 pounds 12 ounces in five fish, an average of over five pounds per bass. Their take home for first was $470. The solo winner was worth $190.

The Midstate Bass Club, directed by Ron Tuck, fishes an eleven-event series and adds a two-day classic in late October. They fish eight different lakes on the Yadkin and Catawba chains. Annual dues are $20 and events cost $70 per boat, with an additional $10 big fish pot. Scott Hartsell serves as tournament site director. The group keeps a 25 team limit.

Second placers Chris Chimiak and Scott Shannon finished seven pounds behind the top team, with 18 pounds 7 ounces at the scales. They won $290. Scott Coleman and Robbie wright placed third with 16 pounds 9 ounces and earned $200. Other teams ending in the six paying positions were, 4th – Jerry Bullaboy and Ray Barrow with 13 pounds 12 ounces for $170; 5th – Scott Hartsell and Danny Lambert with 13 pounds 9 ounces for $80; and 6th – Richard Crayton and Darrell Fisher with 11 pounds 8 ounces worth $70.

The Midstater's next event is an open tournament to be held April 17 on High Rock at the Wildlife-Bringle Ferry Access from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The club's next regularly-scheduled event will be held on Mt. Island on April 24.

Wike And Davis Win Mid State Competition
June 20, 2009

The weather was hot and humid and there was more traffic on the lake than plastic baits in a tackle box, but the Mid State Bass Club launched on Tillery June 20th and brought home the bass. A total of sixteen boats from the group used the Swift Island Landing in an eight hour bass quest, the sixth of twelve such attacks on their schedule.

The early-morning blast off saw boats heading south in hopes of finding the bigger fish down near the dam. After an hour or two of small catches, member boats turned north on the waters. “I think the regular boat traffic was lighter up there anyways,” laughed director, Ron Tuck. The club uses a five-fish limit and live wells worked hard keeping fish healthy in the 95 degree heat that day.

Terry Wike and Chris Davis found all the right holes on the lake, nailing down 15.1 pounds of competitive bass. They also netted the biggest fish of the tournament, a 4.8 pounder.

Todd Ingram and Mark Brown landed 12.13 pounds in their second place finish, while Scott and Danny (sorry, no last names provided) rounded out the top three paying positions with 12.10 pounds, barely three one-hundredths of a pound behind the second placers.

The club moves on to a night tournament, July 18th, when the group launches at midnight from Lake Norman's Pinnacle Access ramp (off Highway 150). The group will fish until 8 AM the next morning. Scott Hartsell is the Tournament Director, while Chris Hartis is in charge of weigh ins.
