NC BASS Gearing Up For Benefit Tournament
April 11, 2009

If you enjoy fishing Kerr Lake and like helping others, The NC B.A.S.S. Federation Nation has just the event for you. The state group will host a benefit tournament April 11th to assist the Boys and Girls Clubs of north-central North Carolina.

Registration and weigh in will occur at Shelter 2, Satterwhite Point on Kerr for two-angler teams. A guaranteed first-place prize of $5,000 is at stake thanks to Rose Gin Bait & Tackle, with second place paying $2,000 and a Big Fish pot of $500 kicked in by Toyota of Henderson for one lucky fisherman. The event is Triton-Gold eligible with 60 boats or more. One of every seven boats entered will receive a check, according to organizers.

Entry fee is $165 (includes Big Fish) and applications are available at various fishing sports and marine stores in the area. Fishbyte.Net will send applications to those who inquire by email (tsargent@fishbyte.net). Mail completed applications to Boys & Girls Club of NCNC, c/o Judy B. Johnson, P.O. Box 5094, Henderson, NC 27536.

There will be a $20.00 late fee will be charged for registrations received after March 27, 2009. Late registration is 5:00 AM to 5:45 AM at Satterwhite Point, Kerr Lake.

NC BASS Federation Nation Charges Onto Roanoke Rapids Lake
March 21, 2009
by Chuck Murray

If you wanted to win the season-opening event of the NC BASS Federation Nation on Roanoke Rapids Lake March 21st, you and a partner would have had to boat over 45 pounds of bass with a seven fish limit! That's what boat team  Mike Barnes and Danny Smith of Roanoke Rapids managed to do. Not surprising, the 45 pounds 1.9 ounces was a new record catch for the Trail.

All their closest competitors had excellent catches, for a normal fishing day. Ricky Todd and Gary McCaroll took second place with 22.73 pounds, Randy Broughman and Foya McLemore took third place with a catch of 22.08 pounds, and Chuck Murray and Randy Groves took fourth with 19.72 pounds.

“It was a great day on the water and the fish were biting,” said winner Barnes. He and teammate Smith also nailed Big Fish honors with a giant 8.14 pounder. The big fish was good enough for $72 and a brand new AllStarRod donated by Ed Collier of Outdoor Accessories Unlimited, 106 West Second Street, Kenly NC (www.outdooracc.com).

Dennis Bradley and his son Tommy, had the second largest fish with a nice 6.01 pounder, earning them $48.  “I was a bit disappointed by the lower-than-normal turnout, but I understand there were several tourneys in the area,” stated organizer Chuck Murray. The Trail pays back 90 percent on the entry fee.

NCBASS Federation Nation Team Trail's next stop is on the Chowan River on May 23rd at Shoups Landing. To find out more information, contact Chuck Murray at 919-853-6918 or email him at leanliner@aol.com. You can also access additional information at the Trail's web site at www.ncbassfederationnation.com.

Bowen Wins NCBASS Federation State Tournament on Norman
October 1-2, 2009

Two days of competition on North Carolina's Lake Norman can be the greatest thrill of an angler's life or it can be pure heartbreak. Good results the first day can often mean little, while reasonable performances on both can lead to the winner's stage. When the NCBASS Federation rolled into Blythe Landing 148 boats strong last weekend, a state championship and qualification for the TBF Southern Division Finals were at stake.

After Day 1, Jeff Hager, of the Alexis club, lead the pack with 10.8 pounds, while Robin Bowen, of Green County Bassmasters, placed a mere 3.4 ounces behind with 10.46. Those were the only two ten pound plus bags hauled in during Friday's competition. Positions three through ten were a full pound behind, but less than one pound separated them all. The setup for a real barn-burning, Day 2 was in place.

As the first flight began to roll in, anglers in the top ten began to fall out. For most, Norman had given up little on Day 2. Robbie Mayton's Big Fish of 5.47 pounds the first outing continued to stand as the largest solo catch. Mayton was there representing the Hawg Hunters Bass Club. Competitors had traveled to the Huntersville area from every corner of the state, but no one was leaving until weights were tallied.

Robin Bowen dragged in 8.44 pounds on his second attack on the lake, and that was enough to oust Hager from the lead and capture the state championship. Hager's 6.75 pound Saturday outing left him in third place for the tournament. Outside the top ten the first day, Jeff Price of the Wetsu club, roared into second place with a combined total of 17.63 pounds.

Mike Edwards, tournament director for the event and the Western Region Director, was thrilled with the competition. “These were two tough days out there and the final results were about as close as can be,” he noted. “The top twelve anglers will move on to the Southern Divisional Finals in June, 2010, and I know we are sending some real contenders.”

Bowen couldn't hide his excitement during the awards ceremony after scales closed. “I knew I had a real chance at winning this after placing second the first day. Norman has a way of disappointing, so there was a lot of pressure today.”

Phillip Sain, President of the NCBASS Federation, noted the successful year for the organization. “Every season is a long one, but we have some great sponsors who know the level of competition in this group. These top teams are ready to compete with the best of the Southern Division Competition, and I know we will have great representation at the TBF Finals.”
