If you started a new bass fishing club in 2009 and want to keep the interest high, there's no better way than to drag out the team boats after the season. The NC Bass Hunters did exactly that in mid-January, attacking Shearon Harris on January 16th. An impressive thirteen boat teams turned out for an “open” event designed to attract new members and keep the veterans ready.
“We are a small club that mainly fishes lakes in North Carolina,” stated club president Sammy McLeod. “We fish once a month from around March until October and just got started in 2009. We had a few dedicated anglers that fished every tournament.” The club has launched a web site in hopes of spreading word about their Sanford, NC area club. Info can be found at www.ncbasshunters.com.
For the dead of winter, that particular day smiled on the group as temperatures rose to almost 60 degrees. The morning began three degrees below the freezing mark with icy ramps at 8 AM. The anglers saw overcast skies and light winds throughout the day's angling. The group named this gathering the 1st Annual Open event.
Although the weather cooperated and a strong field showed up, the bass weren't as cooperative as most would like. Only four teams weighed in fish at the Highway 42 Boat Ramp for the two paying positions. Co-director, Jeremy Potter, reported the 3 PM weigh in winners were Doug Miller and David Mize. The partners managed an outstanding 15 pounds 12 ounces of bass as they captured the $260 payoff. Almost half their bag weight was in one fish, which easily became the Big Fish winner of the day. The lunker tipped the scales at 7 pounds 7 ounces, more than good enough for the $130 prize. The pair reported catching their fish on shallow running crank baits, as were most caught that day.
The final paying position went to Jerry Marshburn and Donald Williams. That team found 5 pounds 15 ounces to grab the $130 second place winnings. Outside paydays were, third place, Mike Leslie and Jeremy Potter with 1 pound 13 ounces, and, fourth place, Junior McLeod and David Cleary with 1 pound 11 ounces.
The NC Bass Hunters will kick off their 2010 schedule with a return to Harris and the 42 Ramp on March 13. For more detailed information about the group, visit their web site at www.ncbasshunters.com or see the Fishbyte.Net Calendar and Forums. You can also email them at admin@ncbasshunters.com.
