Moser & Leinbach Take Tri-County at Tuckertown
June 27, 2009

The Tri County Bass Masters from the Thomasville area picked a tough day and a tough lake Saturday when Tuckertown Reservoir came up on their schedule. A small group of individual competitors launched shortly after 5 AM from the Flat Creek Landing, putting in nine hours of grueling effort on lake with unforgiving bass and very low water levels.

Although air temps began at near cool levels in the early morning, fishermen fought high humidity and bass that only wanted to tease the temptations thrown at them. Eddie Moser and Monty Leinbach fared nearly double what their angling  colleagues did, posting a bag weight of 17 pounds 8.5 ounces. “They really found the right spots today,” congratulated club president, Tom Ballantyne. “They deserve a big round for finding these.” Members added their agreement with hand shakes and applause. The pair walked $160 away in prize money.

Second place belonged to Richard McClure and Steve Casey who captured 9.8 pounds of bass in the five-fish limit competition. The earned $95.

Robert Bohannon and Derreck Rudisix tallied the final paying position with 7.55 pounds. They won $65.

Eddie Moser won Big Fish on the day with a 5.15 pound bass. He added $80 to his wallet for that honor. Eddie Darr handled the chore of weighmaster for the day, a task the group shares each event. Jerry Overcash serves as vice president.

The group meets the first Monday night of each month at the Sunrise Diner in Thomasville. Most of the members start arriving shortly after 5 PM for food and fellowship. The meeting begins around 6-6:15 PM.

Dues for the group are $35 per month. Ten dollars of that fee is paid to the club treasury, while $20.00 is used for the tournament pay-out using a 50/30/20 split. Five dollars is used for the “big fish” pay-out.

High Rock On Fire For Tri-County Bassmasters Fall Open
October 10, 2009

It was probably one of the biggest assaults on High Rock bass in recent weeks, and the big green monsters couldn't hide from the fifty-five boat teams that showed up for the Tri-County Bassmasters Fall Open Bass Tournament last Saturday. For the top six teams, over 112 pounds of the best fell into waiting nets.

The Tri-County Bassmasters call Thomasville, NC their home and Tom Ballantine serves as its president. He is assisted by vice president Jerry Overcash. The group maintains a web site, www.tri-countybassmasters.org , to better serve its membership. This event was held as a benefit for the club's charity of choice, the Special Olympics of Davidson County. The NCBASS Federation (www.ncbass.com) provided the weigh-in trailer and equipment for the event. They are affiliated with  the NC BASS Federation,Southern Division, and FLW Outdoors.

“I am really excited about this turnout today,” stated Overcash as scales were closing. “We had some top anglers show up to compete and those weights really show it. Everyone likes High Rock and fall fishing is certainly here.”

As boat after boat brought their day's catch in, weights on the leader board continued to rise. Early bags of twelve and fifteen pounds kept the large crowd that had gathered at weigh-in applauding. Some of the heaviest hitters had yet to step up to the scales. Weights continued to creep into the seventeen pound range, then eighteen, and finally three nineteen pound bags piled in.

Larry Parks and Gene Singleton stunned onlookers when they dumped yet another huge bag of fish into the basket. Their biggest fish, a 6.1.5 pounder, was tough to determine as it had a number of like-sized fish with it. The team's total shattered the twenty pound mark with 21.2.5 pounds in five fish and remained the leader when scales closed. The pair earned the $1,000 guaranteed first place prize.

The next three place winners all carried the nineteen pound bags in. Less than half a pound separated the second through fourth place finishers. Brian Morgan and Craig Chambers had to settle for the second place, $400 purse, when they scored an impressive 19.60 pounds of bass. Third place went to Buddy and Gerald Ritchie who hauled in 19.25 pounds on their way to a $200 day. Fourth place finishers, Randy Weddington and Brad Smith dropped 19.15 pounds on the scales and earned $150.Steve Sink and Ladd Wicker found an even 17 pounds to take the final paying position and $100. Sixth place was a prize place and the winners, CJ Johnston and Chris Wagner managed 16.8.5 pounds to win two fishing rods donated by Fishing Fever Tackle Shop of High Point.

Oddly enough, two teams had to split the Big Fish award money and trophy. CJ Johnston and partner, Chris Wagner, and Matt Stanly and partner, Jarrett Freeze, both caught identical 7.55 pound toads to grab the honor. The four had a good laugh about the tie, noting that each often partners with one of the others during tournaments. “You gotta laugh,” chuckled Stanly. “These guys are my partners at other tournaments... Goes to show you can't beat a partner!”

The Tri-County Bassmasters raised $400 for the Special Olympics of Davidson County. “I'd like to thank all of you for turning out today,” stated Ballantine as he handed the money to a local Special Olympics representative. “This is a great cause and we really appreciate your support.” The club ended its regular season schedule just recently and top teams competed in the NCBASS Federation state finals the weekend before on Lake Norman.
